AER’s FloodScan service provides daily maps of large-scale, inland flooding based on satellite remote sensing technology. The FloodScan interactive map viewer https://floodscan.aer.com lets users browse the latest maps and over 20 years of data covering the Americas and Africa. FloodScan registration is free. Custom map orders can be placed through the map viewer for purchase through Shopify.

The historical flooded fraction data packages are a digest of the entire FloodScan time series for a coverage region in one file. The files contain FloodScan’s daily area aggregate fractional flooding products, AREA. AREA is the fraction of unmasked areas with flooding aggregated in 1/12° latitude x 1/12° longitude cells (~10 km x 10 km). The files are in self-documenting NetCDF format containing the variables:

  • SFED_AREA: flooded fraction derived from the standard flood extent depiction (SFED) product. SFED is designed to prioritize low false positive rates for large scale flooding with algorithmic consistency over long time scales and large regions.
  • NDT_SFED_AREA: flooded fraction derived from the no detection threshold (NDT) SFED product. NDT-SFED is like SFED but is produced without filtering that minimizes false positives.
  • LWMASK_AREA: cell fraction masked as persistent open water; derived from the ~90-m resolution land-water mask (LWMASK) product

Complete product details can be found in the FloodScan Data Users Guide.
